It feels like every other week a new complexion product goes viral on TikTok, flooding For You pages with creators saying you need the foundation or skin tint that changed their life. Social media has turned beauty launches into a race to get your shade before it sells out, only to start the whole process all over again weeks later. But sometimes… sometimes they’re onto something.
Celebrity makeup artist Patrick Ta is no stranger to his namesake brand’s products going viral. His Cream Foundation and Finishing Powder Duo took over #BeautyTok earlier this year after a video showing how well the product covered acne, and his blush duos—which allow for his signature cream-over-powder technique—constantly sell out. And since announcing the launch of its new Major Skin Hydra-Luxe Luminous Foundation, which dropped today, the creators are already calling it the foundation launch of the year.
I was able to get my hands on the long-awaited foundation early and have been wearing it daily to see if it’s really as good as the internet says. Here are my thoughts.
The Major Skin Hydra-Luxe Luminous Foundation is a buildable, medium coverage liquid foundation with a radiant finish. It’s designed to improve hydration, conceal imperfections, and feel lightweight on skin. The foundation’s formula contains several skincare ingredients, including hyaluronic acid to plump skin, squalane to soften fine lines, and kombucha to boost radiance. It comes in 30 shades and retails for $58.
My skin fluctuates between dry and normal, and I’ve also been dealing with a few breakouts on my chin lately. (Since it’s 32 degrees and humid in Chicago this week, I’d basically call my skin condition “normal” when testing this foundation.) What I look for in a complexion product is that it evens out my skin tone, doesn’t cling to dry patches, and lasts all day.
First off, let me say that this foundation is luxurious. When you take it out of the box, the packaging is heavy glass with a beautiful rose gold cap that both looks and feels luxurious. The packaging also includes a standard pump.
For testing purposes, I followed my normal skincare routine and applied the foundation about an hour later (after it had absorbed) without using a primer. When I first applied it, I immediately noticed how lightweight this foundation feels on the skin. When you work it in, it’s practically undetectable; it just made my skin look hydrated, even, and healthy.
Dewy, hydrating products have a reputation for improving texture and pores, and lately I’ve been staying away from glow-inducing products to avoid that exact phenomenon. However, this one gave me the best of both worlds: glowing skin and a blurred complexion. I noticed right away that this foundation somehow managed to completely blur my skin, making it look like a filter. As I mentioned, I’ve been dealing with some breakouts around my chin that are currently healing, and this foundation covered up a lot of the redness that was left from that without clinging to the dryness left over from the spot treatments. After I finished my makeup, my complexion really did look like I had a filter on.
The first time I wore this foundation, I put it through the ultimate test: a 30-degree night in Chicago. I left the house around 6 p.m. and let it endure a sultry dinner on a patio, drinks with friends, and a bit of dancing. When I got home (later than I’d like to admit), I was shocked at how intact the foundation still looked. It was definitely dewy—which I don’t mind—but despite everything I’d done that night, it hadn’t chipped or worn anywhere. The same feeling held true for an entire workday; without touch-ups, this foundation lasted through my commute, a full day at the office, and a hot commute home.
I try a lot of products and most fall into a gray area of pretty good but not particularly memorable; this foundation, however, is not one of them. Patrick Ta has created a foundation formula that makes my skin look like I drink a liter of water a day, never experience a moment of stress, and get a facial every two months. It’s by far my favorite foundation I’ve tried in a long time, and I agree with the internet that this is the foundation launch of the year.
It goes without saying that $58 is a lot of money for a foundation – especially in this economy – but in my opinion, the quality of the product is commensurate with the price. If you’re looking to treat yourself to a new product, you’d be hard-pressed to find a better one.
