I'm a beauty editor—here's what I think would be in every 'SATC' character's makeup bag in 2024

I have a lot of favorite shows—the first five seasons of Grey’s Anatomy and the original series Dance Moms have been on my TV more times than I can count—but none have ever topped my feelings for Sex and the City. The opening jingle, along with Carrie’s splattered face in her iconic tutu, makes me giggle and makes me kick my feet in the air no matter how many times I watch the show—which, at this point, I estimate is more than half a dozen times.

Since it hit Netflix earlier this year, the show has been on my TV more often than ever, and the more I watch it, the more questions I have. As a fashion and beauty editor, of course, thoughts about each character’s wardrobe have been running through my head since the first time I saw the pilot. But what about the beauty? From Carrie’s iconic messy curls to Miranda’s fiery red pixie cut, the four main cast members have signature beauty looks that are as recognizable as their signature style. And I couldn’t help but wonder… what would be in each character’s makeup bag if the show premiered in 2024?

Of course, we can’t know for sure what each character would have in their modern makeup stash, but I think I can make some educated guesses that are good enough that I’d be willing to bet on them.

Carrie is almost always willing to spend her money on an expensive pair of shoes, but beauty products? Not really. She wouldn’t be on TikTok, so #beautytok hair recommendations are nonexistent for her. To tame her famous curly hair, she used John Frida’s Frizz Ease Touch-Up Cream – which she’s probably been using since she was 13.

Carrie’s beauty routine is built on the pillars of “never change a running system.” In her 20s, she probably wore bareMinerals’ Original Loose Powder Foundation and recently swapped it out for her Complexion Rescue Tinted Gel Cream to even out her complexion after long nights trying to meet deadlines.

Carrie’s priorities when getting ready are outfit, hair, makeup – every time. She doesn’t neglect her skin, though; instead, she relies on a minimal skincare routine full of understated but effective products. She’d moisturize her skin with Cetaphil’s oil-free moisturizing lotion, which she’d happily purchase at her nearest Duane Reade store.

Even though she was married to her straightener for a few seasons, Carrie’s iconic curls were her signature look. She would only buy a new blow dryer if her old one gave up the ghost, and she would opt for Curlsmith’s Portable Travel Hair Dryer and Diffuser so she could leave it at Big’s… with or without his permission.

Carrie rarely wears anything other than minimal makeup, but her lashes are always long, defined, and fluttery. She would be a lifelong fan of L’Oreal’s Original Voluminous Mascara, which perks up her lashes for less than a cup of coffee (while keeping them clump-free).

As a no-fuss woman, Miranda would love multi-use products that would get her ready for work quickly and with minimal effort. Merit’s Minimalist Perfecting Complexion Stick serves as both a concealer and a primer, and she would love to be able to dab it on where she needs to cover and then just walk out the door.

The contents of Miranda’s medicine cabinet would be minimal, so the products they have on the shelves really have to do what they promise. She wouldn’t feel like applying multiple products to her hair after a shower, so she would rely on Dae’s 3-in-1 Cacus Styling Cream as a product to smooth, style, and prep her short hair before using a blow dryer.

As a lawyer (and later single mom), Miranda simply wouldn’t have the time to thoroughly wash and dry her hair every day. To look presentable in the meantime, she would opt for the popular Living Proof Perfect Hair Day dry shampoo, of which she would of course keep reserves in her storage room. Try something new and risk not liking it? She wouldn’t dare do that.

Samantha never hesitates to treat herself (nor should she!), and she’d love to transform her everyday beauty products into a luxurious experience. She’d love Valentino’s High Pigment Lipstick not only for its satin finish that lasts all day, but also for its telltale red packaging that would scream “I am a luxury few can afford” every time she pulls it out of her purse to reapply.

From important meetings to lunch dates to her latest late-night escapades, the last thing Samantha needs is to worry about her makeup slipping. She relies on Patrick Starr’s On ‘Til Dawn Setting Spray to keep her looking fresh as a daisy all day (or night) long—even if that means she doesn’t get home until 3 a.m.

No one has ever fought aging as hard as Samantha Jones – who could forget her infamous flaw of getting a chemical peel right before Carrie’s book launch party – and in true Samantha fashion, she’s willing to try just about anything. She would have spent big bucks on an LED mask to help her fight wrinkles and would use that every morning to start the day productively.
