Calling all millennials: Fall's denim trends suggest skinny jeans are cool again

With the arrival of fall often comes the nostalgia of back-to-school shopping: We reluctantly follow our moms through a department store in hopes of snagging a trendy new outfit (including denim) for the upcoming school year, all the while anticipating a wave of disappointment knowing we probably won’t have the final say. (For me, something changed the day Lizzie McGuire’s mom said no to the flares at Style Shack.) As adults, the return of fall may not mean stocking up on wide-ruled notebooks and freshly sharpened pencils—but thankfully for us, it means we have the power to embrace trends we may not have been aware of as youngsters.

Although I’ve considered—and, modestly, successfully styled—a range of boxer shorts and denim cut-offs this summer, come September I’m ready to slip back into my favorite denim. Although the new season brings with it a wave of enthusiasm for other winter staples like boots and sweaters, slipping into a well-worn pair of jeans feels like the warm embrace we’ve been missing all summer long.

With a renewed focus on elevated everyday wear, fall 2024 runways featured more denim-centric looks than ever before. Although most of us won’t be seen in Valentino’s infamous embellished wide-leg jeans or Miu Miu’s controversial low-rise pleated skinny jeans, contemporary brands have channeled that energy into updating classic denim styles with more premium upgrades.

From a continuation of oversized wide-leg jeans to a revival of skinny and straight-leg options, this season’s top denim trends seem to be at odds with each other. But isn’t that what denim is usually all about: living outside the confines of the typical trend cycle? Its inclusivity (have you seen “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants”?) is perhaps why a great pair of blue jeans never seems to go out of style: there’s something for everyone.

1. Low-rise baggy jeans

Baggy jeans just got even bigger; brands like Loewe showcased two-size-oversized silhouettes with gathered hemlines on the fall 2024 runway. If, like me, you live in a pedestrian-friendly city and wouldn’t dare let your pant leg touch the ground, opt for a pair with a rolled-up waist that will add a little extra oomph to your look. While you can wear a small shirt and big pants, brands recommend a layered approach with a chunky sweater and belted blazer.

2. '90s straight-leg jeans

The ’90s called: you want your jeans back. (And by back, I mean back to all denim wearers.) Denim trends come and go, but none are as enduring as a straight-leg pair. With its easy-to-follow silhouette and no-frills style, this ’90s-inspired denim is as straightforward (literally) as it gets—making it the perfect base for just about any cold-weather combination.

3. Dark-wash jeans

Take a turn to the dark side with this season’s return to raw, rich indigo denim. While the designers won’t exactly take you back to the cowboy-made blue jeans of the early 20th century, they will take you to the land of office-appropriate dark-wash denim. The benefits of a darker wash include a more polished, tailored look that can be worn for a wider range of occasions – from brunch with friends to drinks with your boss.
